Located in Gilgit-Baltistan, Astore Valley is renowned for its Nanga Parbat and Rupal faces. While most trekkers opt for the Astore Valley route to the summit, Nanga Parbat can be approached from two directions. The first route, from the Chillas side, is more challenging compared to the Astore side. Consequently, the majority of hikers now prefer the Astore side. This picturesque valley also boasts beautiful grasslands, meadows, and lakes.
RAMA MEADOWS
Rama Meadows has left me awe-inspired with its breathtaking beauty. It is a serene expanse of trees and grassland, surrounded by the world-famous Nanga Parbat mountain. Although similar to fairy meadows, Rama Meadows has the advantage of being accessible by road. It is located 20 kilometers from Astore City, and the well-maintained road allows easy access. Along the route, you'll come across numerous villages, and if the weather is clear, you can catch a glimpse of Nanga Parbat. Rama Meadows offers several camping areas and hotels for a comfortable overnight stay, where you can enjoy BBQ and bonfires. The summer weather is pleasant, adding to the overall experience.
MINIMARG ASTORE
Minimarg, situated 40 kilometers away from Astore city, is a remote valley that shares a border between India and Pakistan. Previously, it was a restricted area due to its sensitivity and proximity to the Line of Control (LOC). However, when I visited in 2022, no special military permission was required. Now, reaching Minimarg is relatively simple; you need to arrive before 12 am and go through the entry process at Chillam Chowki.
MY EXPERIENCE
The landscape from Chillam Chowki to Minimarg differs significantly from the rugged terrain of Gilgit-Baltistan. In Minimarg, the mountains are lush and strikingly beautiful. Burzil Top, the highest mountain crossing, lies in the middle of the route, with two or three army rest stops available exclusively for those with army permission. If you don't have permission, you must leave the area before 5 p.m. and return to Chillam Chowki.
DOMAIL RAINBOW LAKE
Located 20 kilometers from Minimarg, Domail is categorized as an LOC area, which marks the beginning of the Kargil region and makes it highly sensitive. In this area lies the stunning Rainbow Lake, a small yet captivating water body. The lake's charm is enhanced by the surrounding mountains and the fresh water flowing from nearby streams. Throughout the day, the lake's crystal-clear water undergoes a mesmerizing transformation, shifting in colors and shades from green to green.
